Darjeeling Ropeway was started in 1968 by the Forest Development Corporation of West Bengal. It was initially set up to cater to the tea gardens at the valleys below which did not otherwise have an easy access. Starting with just one cable car, now it was upgraded to 20 cable cars each having a capacity of six persons. It was closed in 2003 after four tourists died when the cable broken causing two cars to fell down the hill. Later it was re-opened with many safety measures in 2012.
Darjeeling Ropeway operates between the North Point in the town of Darjeeling and Singla on the banks of the Ramman River. From an elevation of 7000 feet in Darjeeling's North Point, this ropeway descends to 800 feet at Singla. Stopping at Tukver, Burnesbeg and Singla tea estates, it is an 8 km long ride which takes 45 minutes to reach Singla Bazar.
The present ropeway has been extensively modernized and visitors can now safely travel over the clouds to witness the aerial view of the lush green tea gardens below. It is one of the best ways to experience the panoramic views that Darjeeling is so famous for. The ropeway goes over green forests, high mountains, waterfalls, flowing rivers, breathtaking valleys and lush green tea plantations.

The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, also known as the Toy Train, is a 2 feet narrow-gauge railway based on zig zag and loop line technology that runs between Siliguri and Darjeeling in the Indian state of West Bengal. The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway is the first and still the most outstanding example of a hill passenger railway and among the top Darjeeling Tourist Places.
Built between 1879 & 1881, the narrow gauge Darjeeling Himalayan Railway was designed as an extension of the North Bengal State Railway. Running up to a height of over 7,000 feet, the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway is one of the oldest and highest railway lines in the world. The Toy Train begins its journey from Siliguri and reaches Darjeeling after covering a distance of 78 km and crossing 13 stations on its way, including Ghoom, the highest station in India.
The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, a UNESCO World Heritage, still operates with the original steam engines and it attracts tourists not only from India but around the world. The loops along the route are all remarkable feats of human endeavor and engineering. The entire circuit is filled with scenic views and loops where the train turns around 360°, offer a panoramic view of the hills, making it one of the best train trips in India.
The pace of the train is so slow that local children often hop and off the moving train. Modern diesel engines that are now used are however faster and more powerful. Besides its regular passenger service to/from Kurseong, there are steam-powered joy rides during high season. The joy ride is a two-hour round trip which starts from Darjeeling up to Ghoom and back that covers a total distance of 14 km. The train stops for 10 minutes at Batasia Loop, where it makes a loop around a beautiful and well-maintained garden. From here, one can easily get a bird's eye view of the Darjeeling town, and the snow-capped Kanchenjunga. There is a DHR Museum located at Ghoom station where train stops for 30 minutes to visit the museum.
Visitors can choose a steam engine train or one that has a diesel engine. The steam engine train offers an authentic and traditional experience but is costlier than the diesel engine train rides. The process of booking a seat in Darjeeling Himalayan Railway railways is similar to that of any other train. One can book tickets either online through the Indian Railway's official website, or at any computerized reservation counter.

Mirik

Nestled in the serene hills of Darjeeling district, Mirik is known for its pleasant climate, natural beauty and easy accessibility. The name Mirik comes from two Lepcha words Mir-Yok which means 'place burnt by fire'. The town is dominated by the large Sumendu Lake or Mirik Lake. The southern part of the lake is the tourist town where almost all the hotels are located while the northern part of the lake is more local and in the Northernmost fringe is the crowded Mirik market.
Like Darjeeling, Mirik also used to be a favourite place for the British in India. The open field on the eastern bank of the Mirik Lake was used as a polo field by the British. In 1969, the West Bengal tourism department began the process of acquiring 335 acres of land from the neighbouring Thurbo tea estate. The work of developing this land into a tourist spot began in 1974 when Siddhartha Shankar Ray was the chief minister of West Bengal. The tourist spot, which included the newly built lake and the Day Centre, was inaugurated by Jyoti Basu, in 1979.
Mirik is perfect for travellers who are looking for unexplored places away from the maddening crowd. The main attraction of Mirik is Sumendu Lake which is surrounded by a garden named Savitri Pushpaudyan on one side and pine trees on the other, with a footbridge called Indreni Pull connecting the two sides. A 3.5 km long road runs around the lake and is popular among morning walkers. Sumendu Lake also offers boating facilities in shikaras and some stunning views of the Kanchenjunga. Don Bosco Church, Bokar Monastery and Tingling View Point are the other popular places to visit in Mirik. Mirik is also famous for its tea estates, orange orchards and cardamom plantations.
Bagdogra Airport, Siliguri is the nearest airport, which is about 50 km from Mirik and has well connected flights from Kolkata, Guwahati and New Delhi. New Jalpaiguri Junction at Siliguri is the nearest railhead which is about 54 km from Mirik. It is well connected by train with Patna, New Delhi, Mumbai, Guwahati, Bangalore, Agartala, Kamakhya, Dibrugarh, Puri, Gaya, Indore, Jaipur, Kolkata, Amritsar, Chennai, Chandigarh, Ranchi, Bhubaneswar, Cochin and Agartala. Mirik is well connected by bus with Kurseong, Darjeeling, Siliguri, Kalimpong, Gangtok etc. Taxis, private cars, shared jeeps and tourist mini coaches are also the common vehicles to reach Mirik from the major towns of West Bengal. Siliguri is the nearest major bus station which has direct buses from Kolkata, Darbhanga, Guwahati and Patna.
There are several accommodation options available in Mirik ranging from budget to deluxe hotels and resorts to home stays. Majority of the hotels are located in the Krishnanagar area of Mirik. The DGHC (Darjeeling Gorkha Hill Council) operates a motel atop the hill near the helipad and a tourist lodge near the lake.
The best time to visit Mirik is from March to May and from September to December when the temperature is pleasantly cool and the sky is usually clear offering lovely views of Kanchenjunga snow peaks.
Batasia Loop
At a distance of 4 km from Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, Batasia Loop is a railway loop in Darjeeling of West Bengal. Situated below the Ghoom station, it is one of the mesmerizing places to visit in Darjeeling.
Batasia Loop was built in 1919 as an engineering requirement to lower the gradient of ascent of the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway. At this point, the track spirals around over itself through a tunnel and over a hilltop. After Ghoom (the highest railway station), there is a sharp fall as the toy train moves towards Darjeeling. There was no way a narrow gauge toy train could navigate the drastic fall of about 100 feet to the gradient of the slope. So, a large circular area was built for the loop to make the slope gentle.
Batasia means airy space. The Loop serves a vital purpose for the toy train but is also an attraction in itself. The loop goes around a garden. The mountain garden is beautified with fresh green grass, seasonal and perennial flowers and shrubs. There are seating areas where one can view the train chugging down the slope. There is a War Memorial at the center of the Batasia Loop. This memorial was constructed in 1995 by the District Sainik Board, Darjeeling in commemoration of the brave Gorkha Soldiers, who sacrificed their life to protect the sovereignty of the Nation. There is a Cenotaph and a statue of a soldier paying homage at an elevated platform.
Also, Batasia Loop attracts people for spectacular view of Mt. Kanchenjunga & other snowcapped Himalayan Peaks. The view of the train tearing past the white clouds and deeper into the green beauty of the terrain is a refreshing and enchanting expedition which should not be missed.

My older sister and her two girlfriends Tamanna and Shila, Tamanna works as a Head of Sales and Shila Consultant in a multinational company. When Tamanna gets time off from the office, she chats with her two girlfriends.
ReplyDeleteBut it is very boring to hang out in the same place every day. Shila suggested let's go on a 7-day tour from outside Dhaka, but again they all wondered where to go - what would be the security.
Where can I find a good travel agency? At that time, an information came to my notice in Google's SERP - a list of the best travel agencies in Bangladesh. Many of them offer female friendly Dhaka to Sylhet tour. So the three girlfriends liked Buy Air Ticket Limited from that list. They also offered hotels and airlines. After seeing their offer, everyone decided - they would all go and booked their flight from Dhaka to Sylhet. Auction like hotel and choice. Our flight next 15/03/2022. I hope the tour will be beautiful.
